Licensing

Ripple Effect is proprietary software. It is not open source, and its source is not published. The licence is one page, and this is what it says in plain words; the licence itself is the authority and lives in the public support repository: LICENSE.

What you may do

You may install and run the official builds on machines you own or control, for any purpose, personal or commercial. There is no seat count, no registration and no account.

What stays yours

Clause 1, in the licence’s own words:

Stories, projects, boards, components, scripts and exports you author with it are yours, and nothing in this licence claims any interest in them.

That is the whole of it. The app claims nothing in what you make with it, and the formats are plain text so that the claim is checkable: a project is a folder of Markdown and JSON that opens without the app.

What is not permitted

Without prior written permission you may not copy, redistribute, sell, sublicense, rent or host the software; modify, translate or create derivative works from it; reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except to the extent that law expressly permits despite this term; or remove or alter any notice of copyright, authorship or licence it carries.

Source code

The source is not published. Access to it, where granted, is granted separately and in writing, and carries no rights beyond those stated in that grant. Pull requests against the app are not open.

What is open source

Several of the packages underneath the app are separate projects with their own repositories, published under the MIT licence — two of them ours, one not. They are named on the open source page. That distinction is worth keeping straight: the packages are open source, and the app is not.

Third-party components

Ripple Effect is built on software written by other people, each under its own licence. Those licences govern those components and are unaffected by this one. The complete list is in the application, under About → Third-party licences.

No warranty

The software is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, and to the fullest extent permitted by law the author is not liable for any claim, damages or other liability arising from the software or its use — including loss of or damage to any data, project or document. The licence says this at length; this page says it once, and the practical answer to it is the built-in version control.

Termination

The licence ends automatically if you breach it. On termination you must stop using the software and remove your copies of it.

The premium tier

A paid tier is planned. Its terms of service and its end-user licence agreement are still being defined and are not part of this licence, which covers the official builds as they are offered today. When those terms are published they will apply to the paid tier only; nothing that is free today is planned to stop being free.
