How to export a project copy or a campaign

Choose Export project in the project panel, or Export project… from the command palette. The dialog’s format switch asks for one of two things:

  • Project copy, a folder that opens as a project again. Use it to hand a story to a translator or to keep a copy. It includes .ripple/.
  • Campaign, a compiled campaign ready to be played by the runtime. Nothing in it opens in the editor. Use it for a game or player.

Warnings, such as media left out, appear in Messages. A picture the prose points at from outside the project lands in media/external/ in a project copy.

  1. Choose Project copy.

  2. Under Include media, switch on the kinds that should travel: Images, Videos, Audio. Leave a kind off to send a translator the story and keep the score.

With a kind off, its files are listed and left behind. The passages, boards and soundscapes still point where the files would have been, so you can put them back later.

  3. Switch on Zip files to write one archive instead of a folder.

  4. Optionally strip media or links from the prose. See Strip media and links.

  5. Choose Export, then pick the destination in the system dialog (Export here, or Zip archive when zipping).

  1. Choose Campaign.

  2. Set Include media and Zip files as for a project copy.

  3. If a game or player built without the Python interpreter will play it, tick Needs no Python after following How to export for a player without Python.

  4. Under Output passages as, keep Markdown, or choose HTML (see below).

  5. Choose Export, then pick the destination.

Media left out of a campaign is named in Messages. What a campaign contains, folder by folder, is in Export options and bundle contents.

Campaign only. The controls above the line in the dialog decide what travels; the ones below decide what the prose becomes. The editor and the play view stay Markdown.

  1. Beside Output passages as, choose HTML. Every passage is written out as an HTML fragment per language, ready to drop into a page.

  2. Open the Profile drop-down. With no profile every element goes out bare, a plain <p> or <em> (None — plain elements). Choose Find a profile to pick an existing one, or New profile to make one.

  3. In the profile, give each kind of element a class. The kinds are listed on the left (In the passage), with the Markdown each stands for on a tooltip, and a CSS class field sits on the right. A paragraph, a heading, emphasis, a link, a table cell and a Python snippet can each carry a class. Leave a field empty for no attribute at all.

  4. Choose Export, then pick the destination.

The profile is saved as you type, to .ripple/export/<name>.profile.json. A name is a file name: letters, digits, spaces and dashes. Commit the file with the story so a build reproduces it. One profile serves as many exports as you like. Delete profile removes only that file.

Two switches under The passages; both work on a project copy as well as a campaign.

  • Strip media takes embedded pictures, videos and audio out of the prose, for a reader that cannot show them. It has one child switch per kind.
  • Strip links unwraps links to documents and the web to their words.

A link to a picture is a picture, not a link, and answers to Strip media. Neither switch changes what travels beside the passages; that is still Include media. A strip for a kind that is not in the export is disabled, since there is nothing to strip, and returns as it was when the kind does.
