How to dictate a passage or a note
Dictation types what you say into the passage or note you are writing. Everything is heard on your computer, by NVIDIA’s Nemotron models; nothing you say leaves it.
Switch it on and download a model
Section titled “Switch it on and download a model”Dictation is off until you switch it on, and needs a model on your computer before it can listen.
- Press the gear in the app bar to open the Settings dialog, and pick the General page.
- Under Dictation, choose On. A microphone now floats over the passage and note editors.
- Under Listens with, choose the model:
- English: the most accurate for English, and English only.
- Multilingual: hears 32 languages, and is told the language of the passage you are writing in.
- On the row for that model, press Download. Each model is a download made once: about 2.3 GB for English and 2.4 GB for Multilingual. The row shows the progress, and Stop halts it.
If a download is interrupted or stopped, the row says how much arrived and offers Resume, which carries on from there. A model already downloaded is deleted from the same row, with the bin (Delete from this computer).
A new installation is asked during its first launch whether most of your writing is in English. Saying yes, with its dictation box ticked, switches dictation on and downloads the English model once the first-launch pages are done; the progress is in Settings.
Dictate
Section titled “Dictate”- Open a passage or a Markdown note, and put the cursor where the words should go.
- Press the microphone in the text pane (Dictate). The first time, the app asks Use the microphone?: choose Allow.
- Speak. The button is red while it listens and glows as it hears you, and your words are typed at the cursor. If a stretch of text is selected, the words replace it.
- Press the button again (Stop dictating) when you are done.
One dictation runs at a time: pressing the microphone in another editor stops the first. You can type into the text while it listens; the next words you say start again at the cursor.
The command palette’s Toggle dictation switches dictation on and off, as the setting does.
Which language it listens for
Section titled “Which language it listens for”The English model is English only. The Multilingual model is told the language of the text: a passage in the language its editor is showing, and a note in the project’s default language.
If the microphone does not start
Section titled “If the microphone does not start”| What the app says | What to do |
|---|---|
| The model is not downloaded yet | Choose Open Settings and download the model on its row. |
| The microphone is not allowed | Choose Open Permissions and set Microphone to Allow. Answering Don’t allow to the first question leads here. |
It needs the parecord program (Linux) |
Install the pulseaudio-utils package. The .deb and .rpm install it themselves. |
| Dictation could not start | The session log has the details; see How to report a bug. |
While dictation holds the microphone, its glyph shows in the app bar. Hovering it shows Microphone: Dictation, and pressing it opens the Permissions page of Settings.
